In my City

Lights valiantly keep out the dark

everyone is speeding to reach

a soft place, to lie and look out

on the roadside an old man is craning his neck and searching for moonlight on a flowering tree

seen through a lighted window

a woman in a nightie

winding up her kitchen

putting away jars and shutting cupboards.

reverie scatters, an epiphany,

that our lives require us to soak

idli rice thrice as much as ulundu

let it lie submerged till we emerge

to grind and let the microbes ferment

in the hope of getting fluffy idlis

that can rival moonshine.
