All around me are ancient trees
the kind that hug the earth and sky
and some younger trees too
making a canopy that is thick
and perforated at once letting
the sun slant gently onto my skin
there is a stream nearby
I sit there sometimes my feet soaking
with a book or just empty
with no wish or desire
but to just be just breathe
just look just love
people have reported wild cats
prowling but I do not meet them
though I hear them when I am indoors
at night – reading or writing or painting
they sing for me and I sing for them
our voices fill the nights
this is how I will rest in peace
wild and fully alive to birdsong
sipping sunsets sunrises and
daily forest nourishments
collecting fallen leaves that
will remind me of my death
