The only thing logical about life is laundry

The only thing logical about life is laundry.
You soak some clothes in soap water
scrub them on a washing stone or floor
rinse them at least twice and wring them
then shake-snap-wave out wrinkles and
extra water before neatly placing each
on a clothesline with two pegs (that
do not have to be the same colour) then
let the summer sun take over to soon
bring you crisp, clean clothes that will
hold you in their warmth even on a cold day.

The block-printed shirt may run colour
but it will not come back as a linen trouser
after wash – of this you can be sure.
Even throwing clothes in a washing machine
will bring you the same predictable results:
underwear for underwear and a skirt for a skirt
no petticoat will be turned into a pant unlike
in love and friendship, which promise to
make your life but break your heart
leaving you lost and confused – wishing for a
magical solution where there can be none.

The only thing logical about life is laundry.

  1. This is such an interesting and refreshing (literally at that) perspective! Loved this expression, " shake-snap-waving out wrinkles". :)

  2. Pegs don't have to be the same colour :-) and true block printed shirt will not come back as linen pants! Though I wish it did.

  3. Loved this! Made me smile and also sense the long drawn sigh that runs through the poetic narrative.
