Often my thoughts cling to you while
the dailyness of the days sweeps through
my being holding on to you for land-
marking of life events one could say
that whatever is recognisably me is you
holding on to my being as toes claw into
beach-sand for it to not be taken away
by the wave which is not as much to save
the sand from the fate of the ocean bed
which would have returned it anyway but
to save the whole of this self from being
sand-splashed and water-hoisted in this
sea of time wondering where
does it end which tide
is night which wave
is day
my being holding on to you for land-
marking of life events one could say
that whatever is recognisably me is you
holding on to my being as toes claw into
beach-sand for it to not be taken away
by the wave which is not as much to save
the sand from the fate of the ocean bed
which would have returned it anyway but
to save the whole of this self from being
sand-splashed and water-hoisted in this
sea of time wondering where
does it end which tide
is night which wave
is day

After W S Merwin's Here Together
Enjoyed reading the Merwin poem and your take on it. Sand-splashed and water-hoisted reminds me of Shakespearean word making of compound words :)
ReplyDeleteThanks! In trying to attempt Merwin's style, I really found myself almost hurtling on due to the absence of breaks and punctuation. I think these compound words felt like pauses for me.
DeleteI was swept away reading this, and in a good way.
ReplyDelete:)
DeleteThe way each line flows into the next is extraordinary, truly
