Follow the first rays of the sun before
the chaotic market of wadded corner stores
and sundry clothing shops pulls you over.
Brush past your disquiet over the deep
alleys. Saunter to the clamant fruit sellers.
Pause awhile to chaffer over the price of
apples before walking straight to the Gate.
Taste the deliciousness of rest.
The college you always looked at but never
befriended is still a faithful signpost.
Go behind it to whet your appetite for tart
spiced water and middle-class affordability.
Negotiate speeding cars and the day’s screech.
Duck raging drivers and exhale your relief
upon arriving uninjured at the iron Gate.
Reassess the value of being stationary.
All departures must lead to returns. Keep
your vision trained on the forever-clogged
underpass to see how waiting eventually yields
to the force of expectation. Take in the breeze
of the heady siris as your car breezes through
Markets 1 and 2 to land at the gate. Cross the park,
walk on through the streets that have safely
stored the sweet and sweat of your yesterdays.
Reach Market 2 to re-live and be relieved of
the history you guarded so fiercely. Retrace
your steps back to the Gate and take note of
all that has changed. And all that has remained.
